FAQs
Can threshold ramps be used with sliding glass doors?
Yes, threshold ramps are an ideal solution for making sliding glass doors and patio doors accessible. They are specifically designed to fit securely over the raised track and frame without causing damage or interfering with the door’s operation.
Many models feature adjustable feet that can be set to clear the exact height of the sliding door track, ensuring a stable and level transition. This makes it significantly easier and safer for individuals using wheelchairs or scooters to move from an indoor living space to an outdoor area like a patio or deck, promoting independence and seamless indoor-outdoor living
What is the maximum height for a threshold ramp?
The maximum height for a threshold ramp depends on its design and intended use, but it must adhere to safety guidelines. According to the ADA, a threshold with a vertical rise over ½ inch must be beveled, and it should not exceed ¾ inch. For any rise greater than this, a ramp with a 1:12 slope ratio is required to ensure safety. Most commercially available threshold ramps are designed for transitions between 1 and 6 inches in height. It's crucial to select a ramp that matches your specific rise height to create a safe, gradual incline for users.
What are the ADA requirements for threshold ramps?
To be ADA-compliant, threshold ramps must meet specific safety criteria. For rises greater than ½ inch, the ramp must have a slope no steeper than 1:12. This means for every inch of vertical height, there must be at least twelve inches of ramp length. The ramp surface must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant to ensure safe passage in all weather conditions.
For public use, the ramp should have a minimum clear width of 36 inches to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs. Additionally, proper edge protection is required to prevent wheels from slipping off the sides, ensuring a secure transition.
What is the weight capacity of these threshold ramps?
The weight capacity of threshold ramps varies by model to accommodate different needs. Standard aluminum or rubber threshold ramps typically support up to 600 pounds, which is sufficient for most manual wheelchairs, power chairs, and their users. For heavier mobility devices or bariatric use, heavy-duty models are available that offer an increased capacity of 800 pounds or more.
It is essential to always check the product's specific weight rating before purchase to ensure it can safely support the combined weight of the user and their wheelchair or scooter.
